Tacoma What Causes Condensation on Double Glazed Windows

March 24, 2011 at 6:01 pm | Category: Replacement Windows

Having double glazed windows can be one of the most important things you do to your home. Having PVC windows and doors, not only improves the security of your home, but it also gives your better insulation, reducing energy costs, and also improving the environment. I have been in the double glazing business for more than 20 years, and one of the most popular questions asked to me is, “what causes condensation on double glazed windows?” Let me explain why this happens, and how you can solve this simple problem.

The problem does not usually arise from the PVC windows itself, but from the double glazed sealed glass unit. The double glazed unit is sealed together with a bitumen product, and if this bitumen breaks down, the seal is broken and damp air and water can penetrate inside the unit, and this is where you see moisture between the 2 panes of glass, and this is what causes condensation on double glazed windows.

Before you make any quick decisions, you may want to check that your guarantee covers this, it usually does, but it may be specified in your guarantee that this type of problem is not under guarantee. If this is not covered by guarantee, then check around for a couple of free estimates to get this problem solved.

This problem can be solved in only one way, having the double glazed glass unit replaced. When this happens, it is important to see why the glass unit broke down in the first place. If water is inside the PVC window, this can cause the bitumen sealant to break down. When you are having the glass replaced, make sure you ask the tradesmen to check that the window has the correct amount of drain holes for the water to escape.

You may also want to check that the glass is properly packed, and not laying flat on the PVC frame. All PVC windows are fabricated to allow water inside, and also designed to allow this water to escape. When the glass is installed, it should be placed on small plastic glass packers, to make sure that the water can come in, flow out and not touch the glass unit.

If you do not have PVC windows, but Aluminium or Timber, then all of the above still applies. All modern windows and doors are basically designed in the same way, including water drainage and air flow holes too. Now that you know what causes condensation on double glazed windows, you can get to work on fixing the problem.
